Blizzard Legal Team Sues Player for Naming Their Character ‘CeaseandDesist’
In a shocking turn of events, Blizzard’s legal team is taking legal action against a player who named their character ‘CeaseandDesist’ on a World of Warcraft private server.
The player, who goes by the username ‘RebelRogue91’, thought they were being clever when they created a character with the name ‘CeaseandDesist’ on the popular private server, Azeroth’s Finest. Little did they know, Blizzard’s legal team does not have a sense of humor when it comes to copyright infringement.
In a statement released earlier today, Blizzard’s legal team stated, ‘We take intellectual property rights very seriously, and we will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone who infringes on our trademarks, even in a virtual world.’ The statement also included a list of demands, including changing the character’s name, deleting all screenshots featuring the character, and issuing a public apology on the official Blizzard forums.
RebelRogue91 has since changed their character’s name to ‘LegalEagle’ in an attempt to avoid any further legal action. However, Blizzard’s legal team has not confirmed whether they will drop the case or pursue further action against the player.
In the meantime, players on Azeroth’s Finest have taken to social media to express their support for RebelRogue91, with many changing their own character names to variations of ‘CeaseandDesist’ in protest. It remains to be seen how Blizzard will respond to this latest development in the ongoing saga of copyright infringement in the World of Warcraft private server scene.
